Habitat for Humanity Comes to Tracy

Press Release
"Habitat for Humanity" — Tracy Press, May 2006
The Tracy chapter of Habitat for Humanity will have a Clean Up Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 27 and will need more than a dozen volunteers to help get a house and lot ready for a family who will become homeowners, thanks to the efforts of volunteers.

The city donated the house, which was moved to 212 W. South St.

Here’s what’s going to happen Saturday, according to Evelyn Tolbert, volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity.

• “We will clean up the yard. This means weeding, trimming, cutting, removing debris — whatever it takes. We need people who can come with weed-eaters, garbage bags, work gloves, trimmers and all the lawn stuff.”

• “We will tear off the old dilapidated roof. This means we need people with upper-body strength who can climb up onto the roof and dislodge all of the roofing material.”

• “We will tear out the carpet and flooring in the house. This means we need hard workers of all kinds to rip, tear, roll up and place these materials into the dumpster that we will have on the premises.”

•“We also need a couple of people to provide ice water, juice and a few nice things to keep the workers energized and happy.”
Don’t mistake this for a party, Tolbert says.

“We will have fun. We will get to know a few more nice people in our community who care. But we will work hard.”

To sign up to help, e-mail Tolbert at evelyntolbertfortracy@comcast.net. Habitat also has a list of needs for the house, such as windows, faucets and cabinets.
